Sorry to jump in here like this, but I read a post a moment ago where someone asked if VB had programmed in a backdoor to their software so they could get in and screw things up for us GOOD GUYS when we use their software without a license and the expense of so much money.

I think your response was NO...I am not a programmer, but I have reverse engineered a few software programs in my day and someone has gotten into my web site on 4 occasions now and did something to the 4.2.0 version I am trying to use.

Not saying you don't know what you are talking about by no means...love your work, but one day after a week or more of adding content, "BOOM" web site comes up all out of whack and no amount of tweaking would bring it back. Could not use the same database after re-uploading the software files.

Started from scratch again and about a week later, again the same thing every time. I'm now on my 5th install and upgrading to 4.2.1 in hopes to somehow avoid the same thing again.

So, now the question....if there is no back door....what is causing my site to go bonkers?

What happens exactly when you got "hacked" ?

Defaced ? Why don't you check Apache logs and see who accessed what ?

A vBulletin Backdoor ? Come on, vBulletin is a company, you know that right ? As a company, they shouldn't mess with security & include backdoors since it's illegal, their company would already be closed !

Backdoors can be hidden in softwares, executables, but not in PHP files ! It's aswell find-able so they shouldn't do something like that because

a) Illegal > Company Closed > Employees sued > They loose any single $ paying all their customers all their life.
b) Easily bust-able backdoors since it's unencrypted PHP

And yea, if you get hacked too often, check apache logs, you'll see what's happening by yourself ;)

Thanks for the info, but I'm not sophisticated enough in that area to know how to check Apache logs or where to find them in the first place. Dummy, right?

Anyway when things went off campus, so as to speak, the site had no colors of any kind and all the lines that would normally run across the page, went down the left side of the page. I replaced each file folder and single files one by one trying to see which one was screwed, nothing so I trashed it and re-installed a total of 5 times now. Just upgraded to your nulled 4.2.1 last night and put in some content and going to let it set and cook to see if someone messes with it again.

I have a 5 + year old forum with about 2k members running phpbb3 that I would like to impex to the vb 4.2.1... can you help with that?

Thanks for you response....greatly appreciated.

What is offshore hosting

Offshore web hosting is hosting that is in a country other than where an individual or business is located. In other words, it's web hosting that's beyond the legal reach of the authorities in the country of the individual or business needing web hosting services.

What is anonymous offshore hosting?

With anonymous offshore hosting, clients don't need to identify who they are when they order web hosting services. As with onshore web hosting, they can use private domain registration services. In addition, they can pay for the web hosting services anonymously. Anonymous offshore web hosting providers accept payment methods such as PayPal, Moneybookers, prepaid Visa, money orders, and other payment options where the payer's identity isn't necessarily revealed.

Anonymous offshore hosting may be the choice for people who don't want their identity revealed. They might be famous people who want to maintain their privacy, they may want to maintain a website without their identity being revealed to their employers or ex-spouses, or they could have other reasons for keeping their identity private.

Why some people choose offshore hosting

Offshore web hosting is often the choice for websites used for purposes that are illegal in the country of their owner, such as sites used to send spam and sites with copyrighted content. Websites hosted offshore aren't affected by DMCA notices.

Other people might choose offshore hosting because most onshore web hosts don't allow the type of content they have or their websites are targets of attack because of their content, such as adult content or websites about controversial subjects. Offshore hosting may be seen as allowing more freedom of speech and having more security.

In general, offshore hosting is seen as for questionable content and purposes although it may be used for other purposes as well.

Now here comes the question: I'm running my website on a offshore reseller hosting do i need to worry about DMCA and if i do am i getting spammed with needing to pay due DMCA and what not because if i get any DMCA message and i need to pay then there is noway that I'm going to use this software as being warned by you UNSTUCK. You are not going to pay if DMCA is after you, they'll contact your host if onshore in order to get the copyrights protected content removed from your webserver.

Be aware that some OFFSHORE host will follow DMCA instructions, so you better contact your host before buying the server, ask them if you are fine uploading an unlicensed forum which may be tracked by DMCA.

They will tell you ;)

So you're implying is that whatever I'm doing DMCA will always follow me whatsoever so doing this is an complete utter waste of time and I'm actually walking on a tight rope and so if I'm hosting these files now on my server then the DMCA will follow me once having my board reported.

I've got free Offshore reseller hosting of an friend of mine and already currently have your files on it which is Vbulletin 4.2.1 so what now? Edited by Rishwin
